this is the third piece in an experimental series done in egg tempera and permanent marker—i'd never before used permenent marker in any of my egg tempera paintings before, nor had i ever made them so abstract. the pieces that go along with this one are "matches" and "capri", and the idea behind the whole concept is again linked to my wanderlust. this is a self-portrait depicting me as a stereotypical asian tourist, except i'm taking pictures not of actual places, but of a bowl of matches that are from different places. the assignment was to paint the space around an object, the space behind an object, and the space in front of an object. this is the space in front of the object.
