mr. bryans used to keep giant folders of photos cut from national geographic and time magazine and whatever other publications to which he subscribed. they were organized by category: e.g., food, animals, travel, etc., and it's from these that we, his students, learned to become better artists. i used to pick photos based on whim and fancy; i found the corresponding photo of this painting in the travel folder—i was probably attracted to the old bricks and geraniums.

i've never actually heard about rio s. de pantalon, but i found a photo of it by googling it. i don't actually know what it is. or where in italy it is. nevertheless, it puts me in a romantic mood with visions of pigeons flying around a town square while church bells toll.
