poppy
2005
korean egg tempera & permanent marker on bristol board
24" x 18.5"
i painted this for my friend fania because (1) she once offered to be my wealthy benefactress, and (2) she asked me and our friend laura to paint her something red and something blue. therefore, i chose to paint her this poppy, while laura painted her a betta fish. being rather uninspired—working full-time and all—it took me a few months to complete this project. i started it when i was deathly ill; i had a sinus infection originally, which morphed into a monster conglomeration of ailments, including the flu and strep throat. so, having nothing better to do, i painted. when i got better, however, i lost the motivation to keep going and gave it up for a while. several months later, laura and i decided that we should really get cracking on our paintings for fania before the guilt ate away at our souls, and so i finished.
