new york, new york

i went to visit my sister in tarrytown for a few weeks around christmas 2004, and we drove into the city one day to do some christmas shopping. i was so amazed by the trees and their intricate lighting—i'm actually still amazed to this day, and i live in NYC now—that i couldn't stop exclaiming, like, every five minutes or so, about how glorious they were. but really, i just can't fathom having to string those lights on myself, and i have no idea who does it or when. you never see anyone doing it; they must do it in the middle of the night like elves. and then, after the holidays, they just cut them down and they're gone as quickly as they went up. i just. don't. understand. but i guess that's one of the things that makes the holidays so magical in new york.
