korean egg tempera & permanent marker on arches cold press & canvas
24" x 18.5"

this is my favorite piece out of the experimental series i mention in the description of "tourism". i started collecting matches when i was 10, on a trip to korea, because jayne collected matches. before she had kids, jayne was a buyer for bergdorf goodman and had to go to italy several times a year for her job. one time she brought me back a box of matches from capri that had a painted porcelain tile on it, which served as the object for my assignment. the other matches around that box served as the space around the object, as depicted here. i guess i like this painting best because the style of it seems to fit best with the already graphic quality of the matchbooks. this piece also inspired my friend nora to make the theme of her senior show sushi because of the sushi samba matches. she dedicated her show to me, too, all because of this painting.
