the korean art teacher made me sit in a tiny room the size of a closet once and draw this chair. she didn't tell me why she wanted me to do it, nor did she explain herself afterward, but she insisted that it get done—after first drawing a thumbnail of it. i believe it was to teach me proportions and shading. back then, i used to use my fingers to smudge oddly placed shadows everywhere, but this teacher rebuked me for doing so and showed me that using individual lines and crosshatching are the correct ways to do it. and, of course, she was right.
