a boat at bay

a boat at bay

1996
acrylic on canvas panel
16" x 12"

i think i did a fantastic job on the water in this painting. i can't say the same about the buildings, which are pretty sad, but the water, and the boat, too, i guess, are on point, in my opinion. of course, i can't really claim full responsibility for the boat. or the water, either, probably. mr. bryans used to sit down in our seats and "help" us with our art when we got stuck; when i was younger, this occurred with more frequency. it was pretty much like, i'd bring something i'd done home to show my mom and she'd be like, "how much of this did you do and how much of this did mr. bryans do?"

by the time i left mr. bryans' studio to learn from the korean woman, i was fully self-sufficient. but i still remember the lessons he taught me, like how to paint clear glass and how a horse's body is shaped like a kidney bean, which is the first thing you draw when drawing a horse.
